What Are The Cheer Choice Awards HOUSTON – The University of Houston Athletics Department is gearing up to celebrate the remarkable achievements of the 2022-23 calendar year with the upcoming Cougar Choice Awards. Scheduled for Monday at 7 p.m. at the Fertitta Center, the event will honor outstanding student-athletes for their accomplishments. Hosted by Alton McCaskill IV (Football), Daisy Monie (Track and Field), and Anna Economon (Women’s Golf), the event is organized by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and is not open to the public.
The annual award ceremony features 15 distinct categories, with winners to be announced live on Twitter via @UHCougars. This year’s categories and nominees are as follows:
Rich Stotter Champion for Life Anna Economon, a sophomore and three-year member of Women’s Golf, has been a standout leader among the Cougars. With a strong academic record as an economics major, she has consistently earned a place on the Dean’s List, demonstrating excellence both on and off the golf course. In addition to her academic achievements, Anna serves as the president of the Houston Athletics Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and plays an active role in student-athlete and alumni engagement for the American Athletic Conference.
Ian McMillan, a senior and captain of Houston Baseball, has been a driving force for the team. As a shortstop, he boasts an impressive record, making him a key contributor to the Cougars. His on-field performance, leadership, and dedication to the sport make him a deserving nominee.
Jordan Booker, a senior and team captain, showcased his talent in Track and Field by being a part of the NCAA Championship bronze-medal-winning 4×100-meter relay team. His outstanding achievements both individually and as a team member mark him as a strong contender.
Sondos Moursy, a senior cross country runner, has demonstrated exceptional skill in her athletic endeavors. Her achievements on the course, combined with her recognition as a Key into Public Service Scholar by The Phi Beta Kappa Society, highlight her well-rounded excellence.
Elizabeth Richardson, a team captain in Swimming & Diving, has been a driving force behind the program’s continued success. Excelling both in the pool and in her studies as an Industrial Engineering major, Richardson’s dedication to excellence sets her apart.
Male Cougar of the Year Nathaniel Dell, a standout in Houston Football’s 2022 season, captivated fans with his exceptional performance. As the team captain, he led the nation in receiving touchdowns and yards, solidifying his reputation as a top player.
Justin Murray, a versatile player for Houston Baseball, has made significant contributions both as a first baseman and a closer. His performance on the field, along with his leadership, places him in contention for this award.
Shaun Maswanganyi, a junior in Track and Field
earned multiple NCAA All-American First Team honors. His achievements in various events highlight his versatility and skill.
Marcus Sasser, a guard for Men’s Basketball, lived up to his preseason hype by becoming the 2023 American Athletic Conference Player of the Year. His impressive statistics and leadership on the court make him a strong contender.
Santiago De La Fuente, a junior transfer in Men’s Golf, made an impact in his first season with the Cougars. His consistent performance and leadership on the golf course position him as a nominee for this award.
Female Cougar of the Year Kate Georgiades, a junior in Volleyball, garnered All-American honors and played a key role in leading Houston to the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA tournament. Her outstanding performance and leadership on the court make her a deserving nominee.
Laila Blair, a junior in Women’s Basketball, made history by becoming the first female player to earn a spot on The American All-Conference First Team. Her scoring prowess and leadership qualities are a testament to her skill.
Claire Meyer, a standout in Cross Country, achieved remarkable results in her events. Her achievements in both the indoor and outdoor track seasons have showcased her dedication and talent.
Nu’uausala Tuilefano, a senior in Track and Field, set records and earned accolades for her accomplishments in the shot put. Her consistency and performance make her a top contender.
Chase Farris, a diver in Swimming & Diving, showcased her talent by winning medals at the American Athletic Conference Championships. Her dedication to excellence in diving is evident.
Male Rookie of the Year Emanuel Sharp, a redshirt freshman guard in Men’s Basketball, displayed promise and potential in his debut season. His contributions on the court, particularly in scoring, mark him as a rising star.
Matthew Golden, a true freshman in Football, made an immediate impact by setting records for receiving touchdowns and yards. His remarkable performance as a newcomer is commendable.
Paul Schmitz, a freshman pitcher in Baseball, stood out with his exceptional performance on the mound. His strong statistics and contributions to the team’s success are noteworthy.

Men’s Basketball, under the leadership of Coach Kelvin Sampson, stood out as a top program, reaching the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 for the fourth consecutive season and earning a place among the nation’s elite teams.
Houston Swimming & Diving captured its seventh consecutive American Championship title in its final year competing in the American Athletic Conference. The program’s excellence and achievements stand out.
